Unity ceremonies

Two people getting engaged, becoming as one in a wedding ceremony or renewing their vows are all beautiful moments that no-one will want to forget. There’s the same warm and loving feeling when parents and their children join together as one family in second marriages, or welcome a child into the family through adoption.

A unity ceremony is a way of celebrating all sorts of occasions when people come together, which can be an element of a larger ceremony or a glorious ceremony all of its own. There are many variants of the same theme.

Wine

Wine

In the wine ceremony you, as a couple, pour one glass of white and one of red into another vessel to create a blush wine that you will both then drink, perhaps from the same glass, to symbolise your union. For a cocktail, I take time to find out what a couple’s passions are, then mix a special drink during the ceremony which reflects them as individuals joining together as one.

For a Ruby Wedding recently, the wife loved Prosecco and the husband was a beekeeper, so I made a sparkling wine cocktail coloured red with raspberry liqueur and sweetened with honey.

Sand

Sand

Everyone who’s taking part pours sand into a clear vessel, forming layers. The sand is a different colour for each person, chosen according to personal taste or because of the meanings behind the colours. Red, for example, is associated with passion, energy and love, while orange is thought to indicate happiness and health.

Once filled, the vessel not only looks attractive, but it’s a lasting symbol of unity that can be kept forever.

Canvas

Canvas

At the ceremony, there is a blank canvas, on which your guests can sign their names, add messages, or their own artwork—young children could make handprints.

Sometimes, the canvas may have a picture of a tree, ready drawn or painted, on which every guest can make a fingerprint, like a leaf or fruit.  What a wonderful and meaningful memento from the day to grace your wall for a lifetime.
